SOPHENE. Artagigarta. Civic issues, 57/6-54/3 BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 27 mm, 13.55 g, 12 h), CY 10 = 55/4 BC. Draped and turreted bust of the city-goddess to right. Rev. Wreath with ties inwards; to left, A; to right, monogram of ΠO. Kovacs -, cf. 211 (CY 11). Apparently unpublished and unique for this year. Smoothed and with spots of corrosion, otherwise, very fine.

From an important Swiss collection of Armenian coins, formed since the early 2000s.


Until now, only civic coins from Artagigarta dating to the years 8 = 57/56 BC and 11 = 54/53 BC were known. With this newly discovered piece, we now know that an additional series was issued in the year 10 = 55/54 BC.
